The Opioid Epidemic
The current opioid epidemic has been hard on Virginia and hard on the 27th. However, we have it in our power to fight it. The first thing we need is good data. This includes whether emergency responses are in response to a first-time overdose or to a recurrent overdose. While we are collecting that data, we need to be sure we are implementing best practices. This includes suboxone with wrap-around counseling services. It also means that we can learn from states like California that have revamped their emergency rooms in order to more effectively help those who are addicted. Lastly, it means we should learn from states like New Mexico where they have piloted tele-medicine in order to help doctors feel more competent treating about addiction.
